Since 2007, the presidential website provides chronological lists of state visits and protocol meetings, as well as providing English-language versions of many of President Gül’s speeches. During my stay in Ankara, 2011–12, and at other times in other places, I recorded interviews with numerous politicians, businessmen, mayors, civil servants, journalists, academics, and diplomats, as well as personal friends and members of Abdullah Gül’s family. Many, but not all, of these meetings were assisted through the president’s office; some were attended by journalists, others by a variety of helpful translators.
Yet the deep roots of this ‘new Turkey’ can be traced back to 1950. In that year, Abdullah Gül, one of the AKP’s leading founders and President of the Republic since 2007, was born in the central Anatolian city of Kayseri. Coincidentally, the first multiparty elections to be held in the twenty-seven-year history of the Republic of Turkey earlier that year had brought an end to the rule of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s party.
